The Spitfire Mk.IX was designed and developed to compete with the Focke Wulf FW-190 which in some regards could out-perform and out-climb previous Spitfire versions.
The Mark IX was based on the Mark V airframe with the addition of the new generation of Merlin engines allowed this aircraft to duel with the deadly German enemy.
Stanislaw Skalski was the top Polish fighter ace of the war and the first Allied fighter ace of the war, credited, according to official list, with 18 victories and two probables. By 16th September 1939 Skalski had claimed a total of six German aircraft and became the first Allied air ace of World War II.
