The Siemens-Schuckert D.III was a German single-seat fighter built by Siemens-Schuckert Werke. The D.III was a development of the earlier Siemens-Schuckert D.IIc prototype, and it was appreciated by enthusiastic pilots for its handling and its rate of climb.
Afer a stint in the army, Josef Veltjens transferred to the German Air Force where his skills as a reconnaissance pilot were quickly recognized and by 1917, he was flying single-seat fighters with Jasta 14. During following two years he scored an impressive 35 victories. Veltjens' aircraft were often easily identified by a barbed arrow painted on the fuselage.
