When Darkness Comes is a tile-based board game that combines roleplaying with boardgaming. The Awakening is the first core set in a series, and deals with the undead (zombies, mummies, vampires, etc).
There are two ways to play When Darkness Comes: as a campaign game, where one player acts as the games-master and handles the monsters etc., or with scenarios, where the players play against one another (or cooperatively, their choice) to achieve the goal in the scsenario. The game comes with 6 scenarios, each with a different objective. Players take on characters, either using pre-generated ones included in the games, or creating their own. Character's statistics can be improved from game to game. Each character also has a variety of skills that help them fight, coerce others, etc.
When Darkness Comes uses a variable tile system; each large tiles has a grid of thirty-six squares and shows a building in a town, and the streets surrounding it. These tiles can be connected to each other to form a town that fits pretty much every scenario in the book. Each tile has a number of spaces that are marked with a "?", on which random discs are placed. These discs range from horrifying monsters, to items that help the player's character, to guards, to security cameras, to townsfolk who may help the player. Players find out what these discs are by moving onto them, or using abilities. By making their way through town, players are able to acheive the sceanrio goal.
