Race for the Summit is a rock climbing card game where players challenge a towering rock spire and attempt to be the first to reach the top. First, they lay out the cards to show the ascent. Then they start their ascent, initially flipping over the cards to find what hold each shows. Each hold costs fatigue; over-tax yourself and you fall! That puts a premium on belaying yourself so you don’t lose too much ground.
Players choose one of eight characters at the start of the game; each is portrayed on a clear plastic overlay, so that the character is shown climbing the mountain. Each character has their own preferences for the various hold types, as well as a unique special ability. Climb conservatively and hope your opponents take too many chances or risk being aggressive and possibly take a fall of your own.
To make things tougher, Environment cards dictate conditions on the rock. Action cards offer players more options through special climbing moves. However, they also cause adverse events that players need to overcome in their quest to win the Race for the Summit!
