Magic: The Gathering
Magic: the Gathering is a card game that represents a battle between powerful wizards who use magical spells, items, and fantastic creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. A player starts the game with twenty life points and loses when those are exhausted. The most common method of reducing an opponent's life is to attack with summoned creatures, although other methods exist.
Variety and interest is provided by the five different "styles" of magic - each represented by a colour, and a type of land on which the magic is based:
| | Colour | Land Type | Qualities |
| | White | Plains | Order, purity, law, justice and light |
| | Blue | Islands | Illusion, manipulation and trickery |
| | Black | Swamps | Death, despair greed and corruption |
| | Red | Mountains | Chaos, destruction, war, lighting and fire |
| | Green | Forests | Life, nature, growth and interdependence |
To begin playing, you will need Intro Packs - one for each player. This enables you to learn the rules and begin playing. Intro Packs are found in the Shards of Alara block. You will quickly want to enhance this with Booster Packs - each containing 15 random cards - and are the way to enhance a deck and to begin constructing your own.
