In Colosseum you are a Roman impresario - producing great spectacles in your arena in the hope of attracting the most spectators to your events. You'll earn wealth and glory for each event you run, using it to build ever more ambitious events. Attract the most spectators to one of your events and you'll be granted the title of Grand Impresario. However, to produce larger events that will attract more spectators, you will need to build up your arena's infrastructure.
Object of the Game
The object of the game is to produce extraordinary events that attract the most spectators to your arena. More spectators will bring you wealth and glory; the money you earn will help you acquire new assets such as fearless gladiators, powerful lions and magnificent horses that you will use to produce even more glorious events.
However, to produce these more ambitious events, you will need to improve your arena by adding new expansions, purchasing Season Tickets, or even building an Emperor's Loge to make your arena more inviting to him and other nobles.
During the game, each player will have the opportunity to produce up to 5 events. The player to attract the most spectators to any of her events is declared the winner.
How to Play
Colosseum is a development or city-building game. You must balance the investment of your resources to expand your arena and the Events that you can stage. Getting the balance right will bring the maximum number of spectators for your investment and earn the most money for the next round of the game.
The game consists of 5 game turns, each composed of 5 distinct phases:
1. Investing - players can purchase new Event Programs, expand the arena, purchase a season ticket or construct an Emperor's Loge.
2. Acquiring Event Asset Tokens - players bid for Event Asset Tokens from 5 markets
3. Trading Event Asset Tokens - players can trade unwanted Asset Tokens
4. Producing an Event - players can first attempt to move nobles into their arena; then they produce an Event by displaying an Event Program and accompanying Asset Tokens. The success of the event is scored on the number of spectators that attended - this is calculated from the Event Program, the Asset Tokens used and the number of nobles that attended.
